Wirkola was clear that the movie would be able to blend the sweetness and violence all in one wrapped package. And that is provided by Trudy Lightstone (Leah Brady), who believes in Santa more than he even believes in himself. In amongst all the fights and heist movie action, there is still room for heart. "There are a lot of movies that we pay tribute to, with Easter eggs and references." Eagle-eyed viewers should look out for definite nods to Home Alone and more, most of which aren't in the trailer. It's actually one of my go to Christmas movies."Įxpect plenty of cine-Christmas references in the movie, too. "Yeah, we thought maybe for if we ever were lucky enough to make a sequel, maybe we should actually pay more tribute to that moment. ![]() "We actually talked a lot about that, it feels like it could have been one of those commercials in the beginning of Scrooged!" Wirkola admits. As it happens, Wirkola and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller had that in mind. While that features Lee Majors helping Santa, the idea of needing to battle mercenaries storming a residence resonates. While Die Hard is an obvious reference, we couldn't help but be reminded of The Night The Reindeer Died, one of the fake TV promos that kick off 1988's Bill Murray-starring Scrooged. With the trailer now online, Empire talked to Wirkola about making the movie sweet without ever being saccharine and which stunts were brainstormed during production. Tommy Wirkola, the director behind the zombie madness of Dead Snow and the fairytale-tweaking Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters is back for more fantasy-inflected action mayhem, this time with healthy helping of tinsel and fairy lights. The output will either record the number of times that each cell location in the input surface raster can be seen by the input observation locations (the frequency analysis type), or record which observer locations are visible from each cell in the raster surface (the observers type). If this parameter is unspecified and the default field does not exist in the input observer features attribute table, it defaults to -90. You may overwrite it by specifying another numerical field or a value. ![]() You can select a field in the input observers dataset, or you can specify a numerical value.īy default, a numerical field VERT2 is used if it exists in the input observer features attribute table. The value for this parameter must be less than the Vertical Upper Angle parameter. The allowed range is from -90 up to (but not including) 90. The value is specified in degrees, and can be integer or floating point. This value defines the lower vertical angle limit of the scan relative to the horizontal plane. Syntax Visibility(in_raster, in_observer_features, ) Parameter See Analysis environments and Spatial Analyst for additional details on the geoprocessing environments that apply to this tool. ![]() An example of when an input raster may be resampled is when the output coordinate system, extent, or cell size is different from that of the input. When the input raster needs to be resampled, the bilinear technique will be used. For example, through the observer offset parameter, you may specify an offset to the observer elevation in the visibility analysis. Use the observer parameters to gain more control over the visibility analysis process. When the input observer features contain multiple observers, the output value is the minimum of the AGL values from all of the individual observers. Each cell on the AGL output raster records the minimum height that needs to be added to that cell to make it visible by at least one observer. If the point lies above the local horizon, it is considered visible.Īn optional above-ground-level (AGL) output raster is provided by the tool. The local horizon is computed by considering the intervening terrain between the point of observation and the current cell center. The visibility of each cell center is determined by comparing the altitude angle to the cell center with the altitude angle to the local horizon. If the input raster contains undesirable noise caused by sampling errors, you can smooth the raster with a low-pass filter, such as the Mean option of Focal Statistics, before running this tool. For the other, it identifies which observers are visible from each raster surface location. ![]() For the first type, the tool determines which raster surface locations are visible to a set of observers. This tool supports two visibility analysis types, Frequency and Observers, which is controlled by the Analysis type tool parameter. There aren’t any reviews for this product yet, but if it does what it says it’s going to do it’s bound to make a splash in the wildlife camera space. This smart bird feeder from Bird Buddy recently launched off of Kickstarter, and is currently available for pre-order. You’ll also want a camera that’s waterproof and durable against the elements since, unless you’re some type of Ace Ventura character, your bird feeder is probably outside. This is one of the reason why we included a few trail cameras, as they’re great at picking up on an animal’s movements and swinging into action when needed. Lastly, you want a camera that turns on when it’s supposed to. Don’t let that happen! Capture everything, including moments at night when you’re less likely to be awake to catch the action yourself, with a camera that’s got night vision capabilities. You want to be able to actually see and hear what the camera picks up, so at a minimum you should have the ability to record 16mp of photo quality and 1080p of video quality.Ī lot goes on at night, including non-bird critters potentially snacking on your bird feeder goodness. Your top priority, besides a camera that can successfully fit into your space and attach to your feeder, should be image and video resolution. What To Consider Before Buying a Bird Feeder Camera All of that, and more, is possible with the best bird feeder cameras. Imagine being able to save every bird that happens to land on your feeder, look up the specific species later, and track their habits over time. If you’re a bird enthusiast, or friends with one, you know how intense a hobby birdwatching can be. Bird feeder cameras enable you to get an even closer look, and save the footage to rewatch later. Another great way to get up close and personal with nature? Installing a bird feeder, and bird feeder camera, to let all the winged animals in your neighborhood know they’re welcome.īird feeders are great for attracting birds (and sometimes, begrudgingly, squirrels), so you can get a closer look at the exquisite coloring of that finch, the grace of the blue jay or the intense athleticism of the hummingbird. There are many ways to do this, including grabbing a pair of your favorite hiking boots and hitting the trails, or packing up your camping tent and spending a few nights under the stars. Every object that you can inspect feels weighted with character and use, with so much untapped potential for storytelling.īut the game doesn’t put them to use, and in the end the game leans on convention to tie up its narrative threads. The soft focus and shifting perspective that can be seen in the screenshots give the environment a filmic atmosphere uncommon to games of this genre. There are the usual horror gimmicks of sentient slammed doors, but it’s the atmospheric noises that really shine here.Ĭombine the attention to sound design with the environment design itself, and we really should be in with an absolute winner here. It’s like being home alone as a child, too frightened to move in case the noise you hear isn’t your own. Every floorboard creaks as it should, echoing around the empty space in a way that makes you freeze in space, listening for intruders. Just the sound of Nicole walking down the staircase has a level of realism that throws you immediately into the moment. Where the voice acting falls down, the sound design, and even the world of the hotel itself, makes up for it immeasurably. It gets the job done, as we find out more about Nicole’s family history at a balanced pace, but it fails to give a substantial sense of character to either protagonist. Yet, at times the script is a little stilted, and it's easy to find yourself cringing at some of the interactions between Nicole and Irving. It’s a small missing link, but it's enough to break your immersion, reminding you that this is a game with limits.Īlongside the acquired objects, the game’s voice acting is a welcome break from the usual notes, newspaper clippings and tape recordings that saturate this genre. ![]() The sound equipment that is so effectively used once to let Nicole hear the creepy voices in abandoned halls, brings up nothing when used later. While all remain in her inventory after collection, after their particular scene they become redundant. It’s a shame that these small devices aren’t put to greater use across the span of the game. As the light grows dimmer, you’ll find yourself spamming the camera constantly, snapping shot after shot to get the brief security of a flash of light. Using the flash of each picture taken briefly illuminates the corridors before you, creating haunting images of the empty halls. The Polaroid camera, for example, becomes your limited light source when the hotel’s electricity fails. These items appear at different stages of the story and add a great sense of atmosphere to certain scenes. With no time restrictions or rigidly fixed direction, players are free to roam the creepy setting at their own pace, with only the completion of loose objectives structuring when each day ends.Īlong the way Nicole picks up items to help her discover more about the hotel, including a blinking flashlight, a Polaroid camera and a filmmaker’s sound equipment. Split out into days, the game mostly revolves around the cell phone conversations between Nicole and Irving, as she rediscovers the home of her past, while Irving, familiar with the family and the hotel, fills her in on recent years. It’s because horror would so perfectly befit this setting that exploring it is constantly tense, even though the lights are on and you’re absolutely sure no one's home. ![]() ![]() While Nicole discovers more facets to her family’s sordid past, the setting of the hotel groans and creaks around her. If you’ve not thought of The Shining yet, you absolutely should be by now. So, we’re in an old wooden hotel, mostly alone, that shows signs of habitation everywhere, but seemingly houses no one, while a snowstorm rages outside. She’s not entirely alone, however, as a young FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) agent named Irving keeps in contact via a radio telephone, a befitting piece of tech for the game’s 1993 era. ![]() With a snowstorm descending on the creaking hotel, Nicole isn’t going anywhere in a hurry. But things obviously can’t work out that easily. Nicole’s goal is to return and inspect the decaying hotel, left empty after her father’s death, so she can sell it off and with it move on from her past. ![]() Superconducting electronics plays an important role in the current quantum information technology boom, which in turn promotes the development of superconducting electronics. In metrology, superconducting Josephson effect and Josephson junction array devices have been widely used in the redefinition of quantum voltage reference and basic units of the International system of Units. Superconducting integrated circuit has been included in the international roadmap for devices and systems, and shows that having the potential to become one of the mainstreams for post-Moore information processing technology. Superconducting Josephson parametric amplifier has become a key element for superconducting quantum computing. They are now key technology in geophysics, astrophysics, quantum information science, biomedicine, and so on. The sensitivity of superconducting radiation detectors such as superconducting SIS mixer, superconducting hot electron bolometer, superconducting transition edge sensor, superconducting nanowire single photon detector, and superconducting microwave kinetic inductance detector are near the quantum limitation. Owing to the ultrahigh sensitivity to magnetic fields and currents, superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) have been used as the irresplacible sensors in geological surveying, magnetic resonanc imaging, biomagnetic imaging, and other areas. HTS microwave devices have shown much higher perfomance than the traditional ones and have found their ways to the industry applications in mobile communication, radar, and special communication applications. Great progress has been made in the application of superconducting electronics in the last two decades. It has been nearly 110 years since the discovery of superconductors, and more than 30 years since the discovery of high temperature superconductors (HTS). By aligning the fiber core position to the center of a superconducting hot electron bolometer mixer at the rear side, we demonstrate the application of a fiber coupled demultiplexed QCL source for pumping the superconducting mixer with adequate LO power. The diffraction beam has been readily coupled into a 2 m long polycrystalline fiber, where a single-lobe circular beam has been delivered at the fiber output. Reflection phase grating generating 2 × 2 beams has been achieved with a total power efficiency of 64% based on a gold covered etched silicon nanostructure. This scheme eases the use of a beam splitter in front of the mixer. The coupling scheme relies on the combination of a phase grating generating multiple LO beams and a polycrystalline fiber delivering the demultiplexed LO signal to a superconducting mixer at 4 K in a closed-cycle cryostat. We have developed a fiber coupled demultiplexed local oscillator (LO) source for cryogenic applications based on a distributed feedback quantum cascade laser (QCL) at an operating wavelength of 10.6 μm.
